About Us

Amateur Radio in Dundee has a very long history. We know that in 1913 someone called McEwan of 2 Airlie Place applied for a transmitting licence. John Clarricoats in his book "World at their Fingertips" listed the Dundee and District Amateur Radio Wireless Association as one of the petitioners to the Post-Master General on December 9th 1921 asking for permission to transmit telephony. There was obviously a very active group of enthusiasts in Dundee at that time.

The present Club can trace its beginnings to two keen 'Hams' on the staff of the then Kingsway Technical College, Derek Coupar and Findlay Baxter. They were responsible first of all for instituting RAE (Radio Amateur Examination) classes at the College in October 1969. These classes have continued to this day - now, of course, under the aegis of Dundee College of Further Education.

Derek was concerned that all the successful entrants for the RAE would lose touch with each other once their course was finished and proposed the setting up of an Amateur Radio Club. So in the spring of 1970 the Kingsway Technical College Amateur Radio Club began, unofficially, to meet at the College. The official start to the Club's activities was in September 1970 at the beginning of the new College year. GM4AAF, the Club's callsign dates from early 1971 and the club was affiliated to the RSGB (Radio Society of Great Britain) in that year.

We meet every Tuesday evening with the offical meeting starting at 7.00pm in the Dundee College Kingsway Campus. If you are interested then why not drop in around about 6.50pm and have a cup of coffee and a chat with us. You will find directions on the Club Meetings Page. .....all welcome. If you get lost try giving us a call on S20, GB7DD, or GB3DD....just call for GM4AAF our Club Callsign.
