Yoshihiro Sugimoto (JE2HCJ) Visits Dundee

Yoshihiro Sugimoto - JE2HCJ

A top Japanese banker attending the G20 Summit at St Andrews took time out to meet up with some of his fellow amateur radio enthusiasts during his visit to Scotland.

Some of the members of Dundee Amateur Radio Club met with Yoshihiro Sugimoto (JE2HCJ), who works for the Bank of Japan and is one of the country’s leading radio amateurs. He has operated radio stations in many parts of the world, including Australia, the US and Mauritius.

As this was his first visit to Scotland, he wanted to meet some local amateurs and was especially interested in the Club's D-Star GB7DD Repeater. He got in touch with the group over the airwaves and arranged to come along to the club during his trip.

Mr Sugimoto met up with a group from the club for a chat. The conversation was mainly about radio and the differences between the Japan and UK radio scenes, although he was also keen to learn about the history of Dundee.

Those who met with him reported that it was great to speak with him, and presented him with some personalised QSL postcards — usually sent between amateurs confirming a long distance radio contact. In return, he presented the club with a banner from the Nippon DX Association.

What is Amateur Radio?

Amateur Radio is a unique, fascinating and friendly hobby that captivates the interest of millions of people around the world.

Amateur radio is all about the skill and fascination of communicating using radio.

Amateur Radio operators come from all walks of life. They are all ages, sexes, income levels and nationalities. Whether they prefer Morse code, voice communication on a hand-held radio, or computerized messages transmitted via satellite, they all have an interest in what's happening in the world, and they use radio to reach out.

Fun for Everyone!

Some are attracted by the ability to communicate across the country, around the globe, or even with astronauts on space missions. Others may like to build and experiment with electronics. Some enjoy using Amateur Radio's digital communications opportunities. Those with a competitive streak enjoy contests, where the object is to see how many hams in distant locations they can contact. Some like the convenience of a technology that gives them portable communication.

Mostly we use it to open the door to new friendships over the air!
